Yesterday I commented on the controversy surrounding General Peter Fuller's dismissal
after impolitic remarks about the Afghan government, but until Carl Prine blogged about it today I had missed General Allen's comments as to why he had no choice but to sack Fuller:

"These unfortunate comments are neither indicative of our current solid relationship with the government of Afghanistan, its leadership, or our joint commitment to prevail here in Afghanistan.  The Afghan people are an honorable people, and comments such as these will not keep us from accomplishing our most critical and shared mission – bringing about a stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan."

This is horseshit. "Our current solid relationship with the government of Afghanistan" - really?

Does Allen mean the same government that is rife with corruption and that has consistently batted away US efforts to combat graft; the same government that tried to steal last year's parliamentary elections and successfully stole the presidential ballot; the same government that has little sway outside Kabul and is deeply reliant on northern warlords to stay in power; the same government whose security services after billions of dollars in US taxpayer largesse are still unable to operate independent of US forces; the same government whose head recently suggested he would side with Pakistan if that country went to war with the United States (for those of you keeping score at home, Pakistan is currently the country waging a proxy war against the Afghan government and the United States would be the country defending the Karzai regime).

That appears to be the government that Allen is referring to. Would anyone who follows the war in Afghanistan closely not share the view that one of the greatest impediments to the success of US efforts there is in fact this same Afghan government for which Allen offers unalloyed praise? Does anyone seriously question Fuller's arguments that the government he deals with in Kabul is "isolated from reality" and that it is a poor partner for the current US mission in Afghanistan?

No one questions that the Afghan people are an honorable people - and at the very least they deserve a government better than the kleptocracy that has taken up residence in Kabul. Nonetheless, the notion that the US and Afghan government have a shared mission besides the very narrow desire to see Hamid Karzai remain in power and Afghanistan to continue to maintain the thin veneer of "democracy" is debatable to say the least.

But this is what we have to come to expect from the ISAF, the US military and our civilian policymakers - platitudes alleging success in Afghanistan and declarations of "solid relationships" between the US and the Karzai government. Indeed as Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix Kuehn recently demonstrated, ISAF press releases about tactical success in Afghanistan is both inconsistent and broadly misleading. There is, not surprisingly, a pattern here.

Apparently this is what we need more of in Afghanistan - rather than the ill-timed and impolitic honesty of a two-star general.
