I guess I'm just noting the distinction between negotiation and capitulation. Which ought to be obvious, now that I think of it.

David, I don't think these are very good analogies. Israel isn't demanding that the Palestinian people or authority, through their leaders, declare allegiance to Israel, require the West Bank to become a Hebrew-speaking territory or declare the West Bank to be sovereign Israeli territory.

But here's what's wrong with Israel's demand, nevertheless: The demand is designed to divide, humiliate and weaken the Palestinians by getting some Palestinians to declare other Palestinians to be second-class persons.

Imagine if the United States demanded of the State of Israel, as the price for securing from Washington some much needed aid or protection against some foreign enemy, that Israel first solemnly and publicly acknowledge and affirm that the United States is a Christian nation, and thereby declare by implication, with their own mouths, all of their fellow-Jews in America to be lesser-status citizens of the United Christian States of America than the Christians in the US? Wouldn't we all understand this as a case of odious and gratuitous humiliation, in which the United States was exploiting a more powerful position, handing Israeli Jews a knife, and demanding that the latter stab their fellow-Jews in the back in exchange for something they dearly need?

Let's also remember that any concessions extracted by Israelis now can be pocketed and exchanged on the international diplomatic market in the future. It is conveniently forgotten in the United States these days that the State of Israel is currently ruled by a radical, far-right government, and that the thuggish boss of an openly fascist party is now the Foreign Minister of Israel. One possibility that Palestinians have to worry about is that any "Jewish state" verbal concession will be pulled out later to be used by Israel's government to justify a move to ethnically purify Israel, and return it to its true Jewish nature - a nature which even the Palestinian leaders themselves would be on record as accepting - by expelling and transferring Arabs from Israel.

What will happen when the Israelis decide to load Palestinian Arab citizens on buses and trucks and deposit them outside the Israeli border? Won't the government say, "The Palestinians themselves admit Israel is a Jewish State, and these people aren't Jews." And won't the United States, which is always generally disposed to go along anyway with Israeli plans, find itself with fewer objections to make?

We really have to ask ourselves critically why the current deeply racist and bigoted Israeli government is so hell bent on extracting this concession from Palestinians. What exactly is a "Jewish state" anyway? Is the title just an honorific? Or is a Jewish state a state in which non-Jews are not entitled to live save by the indulgence of the Jews in that state, or a state in which non-Jews have fewer rights and protections?
