NATO warns Pakistan of the dangers of the Swat truce.  Pakistanis in Swat followed a hardline cleric on a peace march to rally Taliban insurgents to lay down their arms under the new truce with the Pakistani government.  Pakistan privately aids US Predator strikes, despite publicly condemning them.

Israel says there will be no Gaza cease-fire until Hamas releases Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit, who was captured in 2006.

Britain begins a second trial for eight men accused of plotting to bomb airplanes with liquid explosives.  The British Law Lords ruled that radical cleric Abu Qatada can be deported from the UK to Jordan, where he faces jail time for terrorism.

The swiftness and depth of the global slowdown surprises economists.  The U.S. housing numbers fell to record lows in January.

Congress should create an independent blue-ribbon panel or similar body to investigate a host of previously unreviewable activities of the Bush administration, including its detention, interrogation and surveillance programs.
