Over at bloggingheads, Daniel Drezner and I debunk the mainstream media frenzy-du-jour that progressives are split over the Obama Cabinet (thanks to MW and others who pointed this out first); ponder the regional implications of the Mumbai attacks; and complain about the excessive and obscuring focus on western victims. I've been meaning to point out grumpily somewhere, and the Arsenal seems like the place, that 400 people died in communal conflict in Jos, Nigeria over the same period last week and hundreds of Indians have died in previous terrorist attacks this year, not to mention the fifty Iraqis killed in bombings in the last two days.
On a lighter note, we invite commenters to give our infrequent dialogues a catchy name. Figured our loyal democracyarsenal crowd would want in on that.
As much as we would like to think that all tragedy to all people are equal to us as people or media, evolutionarily that has not been our story. Throughout history some tragedies affected some of us more than others (who so ever is the "us" in question). While the size of tragedy makes distant tragedies affect us more, people are not exactly using simultaneous equations to assess the significance of tragedies. In the internet age, the information is a few clicks away to those that care beyond conventional affinities. For those to whom this matters, they are being informed.

The Western media also seemed to have double standards during the nineties in which a lot of attention was devoted to the former Yugoslavia in which most victims of that genocide where while basically ignoring the atrocities in Rwanda.
