The Repulican's Robocall
Posted by James Lamond

John McCain and the RNC have a new robocall out in Wisconsin and Ohio that is just ridiculous, and completely out of touch with what is actually happening in the campaign. The robocall, says Obama would be “a weak president” saying he would “endanger American lives.”  What is ironic is that the robocall comes out as Republican foreign policy leaders continue to flock to Obama. When thinking about whether or not Obama is the one that would "endanger American's Lives," the McCain-Palin ticket and the RNC should take a look at what foreign policy leaders in their in party are saying.  Lets just take a look at the the past week or so:

  • Colin Powell endorses Obama saying, "The president will also have to make decisions quickly as to how to deal with Iraq and Afghanistan.  And also I think the president has to reach out to the world and show that there is a new president, a new administration that is looking forward to working with our friends and allies.  And in my judgment, also willing to talk to people who we have not been willing to talk to before. Because this is a time for outreach.”
  • In Newsweek Nick Burns, formerly the highest ranking diplomat in the Bush administration, criticized the position taken by the McCain of refusing to engage in tough diplomacy with U.S. enemies, asking, “Is it really smart to declare we will never talk to such leaders?”  He continued, cited “ardent cold-war presidents -- Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, none of whom was often accused of being weak or naive—decided that sitting down with our adversaries made good sense for America. They all talked to Soviet leaders—men vastly more threatening to America's survival than Ahmadinejad or Chávez are now . . . it is crude, simplistic and wrong to charge that negotiations reflect weakness or appeasement. More often than not, they are evidence of a strong and self-confident country.”
  • Ken Adelman, former high level Bush foreign policy adviser, came out in favor of Obama, saying, "McCain's temperament -- leading him to bizarre behavior during the week the economic crisis broke -- and his judgment -- leading him to Wasilla -- depressed me into thinking that "our guy" would be a(nother) lousy conservative president. Been there, done that. I'd rather a competent moderate president. . .Nonetheless, I concluded that McCain would not -- could not -- be a good president. Obama just might be."
  • Chuck Hagel says in an interview, The Bush administration and John McCain’s approach to Russia, saying “I just don’t think that that’s a smart way to handle this.  We’ve got to be very careful that we don’t misplay all this and unwind some of the progress we’ve made and go back, intentionally or unintentionally, to another form of a Cold War. We’re going to have differences, of course.  But you have to look at where the common interests are.” “Today we are all Georgians. That’s an interesting thing to say, but I’m not sure what John means by that. Is he willing to put F-16s in the air and attack the Russians?”  Hagel also discussed McCain’s plan to kick Russia out of the G8 saying, “You’re not going to isolate Russia—that’s completely crazy!” He said that McCain’s approach to Russia was one of the reasons that he could not endorse him.
  • Dick Lugar, Republican Co-Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, endorsed Obama's approach to foreign policy, saying “He [Obama] correctly cautions against the implication that hostile nations must be dealt with almost exclusively through isolation or military force.  In some cases, refusing to talk can even be dangerous.”
  • Former Republican Sen. Larry Pressler from South Dakota, endorses Obama, citing his ability to handle crises, and saying McCain's "handling of the financial crisis made me feel nervous."

We see that Republican foreign policy leaders cannot in good conscience support their own candidate's foreign policy.  Most of them even cite McCain's reckless behavior, specifically saying Obama is the one that they want to handle a crises.  Whether it be his reaction to the financial crisis; the outbreak of war between Georgia and Russia; or his calls for war with Iran, Iraq, and Syria on following 9/11- John McCain has continuously demonstrated reckless and confrontational responses to crises.
