Wrap up on the Palin Speech
Posted by Ilan Goldenberg

So we clearly did a lot of rapid response blogging last night on the Palin speech.  But it's worth reflecting the next morning.  Yes.  She delivered an effective, hard hitting, vicious and I would say over the top attack speech against Obama.  The base clearly loved it.  She is clearly a talented speaker.  But that doesn't change two very basic problems.

1.  Her speech didn't address any of the issues that swing voters really care about.  Instead it focused solely on the Republican base. Where was any talk of:

  • Real economic ideas for the middle class that aren't same old misleading "they're going to raise your taxes" argument
  • Healthcare
  • Global warming
  • Afghanistan and Pakistan and the real threats that are facing us

2.  There are still many many questions about Sarah Palin's experience and positions.  Speech or no speech.   She still:

In the end of the day Sarah Palin was still the mayor of a town of 8,000 people two years ago.  Despite her attempt to compare that job to what Barack Obama was doing twenty years ago, she just doesn't appear all that qualified to be the Vice President of the United States.  And her views and speech yesterday don't appeal to mainstream swing voters.

What Sara Palin most needed to do was convince a doubting world that she is actually prepared to assume the presidency should anything happen to John McCain. I don’t see that she came remotely close to doing that. Palin showed us nothing at all that would suggest she is prepared to step in at a moment’s notice to manage the complex and far-flung global affairs of one of the most powerful and economically advanced nations in the history of the world.

Her performance was a national embarrassment. I shudder to think what our allies are thinking, all those people in other countries who still depend on the power, wisdom and professionalism of United States government to protect them and to preserve global security. We just told them we think any old hockey mom or little league dad can guide the global affairs on which their lives and well-being depend.

Somebody needs to tell Sarah Palin and her handlers she’s running for Vice President of the United States, not the PTA.

I thought that Palin's speech was nasty and immatue. Instead of giving concrete proposals to solve the nation's problems she just engaged in name calling and cultural warfare. I'm sick of the Republicans saying one city is better than another such as Scranton is better than San Francisco. I find those attitudes towards other Americans to be frankly unAmerican. If the Republicans want to say that somehow they are more American than other Americans, how come they have the exact same views about San Francisco and other coastal cities as Osama Bin Laden.

P.S.
I feel sorry for members of the NSN staff who had to hear this terrible speech in Minneaoplis

I have a few questions about Sarah Palin's "experience" that I think are relevant to her qualification to be a heart beat away. I wonder if any reporters will start asking them. They include:
The Kind of Experience We Might want to consider

Has she ever been in the White House or met a President other than President Bush?
Has she ever met with a sitting or former head of state from Japan, South Korea, France, UK or any other leading economy or democracy?
Has she ever met with a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs or been in the Pentagon?
Does she have a security clearance?
Does she know how many nuclear weapons we have, how many Russia has or how many countries have nuclear weapons? Does she know how long it takes an ICBM to reach the United States from overseas?
Does she know how much money we spend on defense? How many people are in the armed services or the reserves?
Does she know who is in the NATO alliance and who is not in the NATO alliance?
Has she ever met the President of a major university outside of Alaska?
Has she ever reads the constitution of the United States (I mean the whole thing).
Has she ever met a Supreme Court justice?

Just curious.

I've Googled, and I've gone to factcheck.com and can't find a word on Palin's "security clearance", so I've
no way to verify the following email I received.

Jon, the following may answer your curiosity on a few of your questions:

"SARAH PALIN'S SECURITY CLEARANCE"

"And here's another testimony to the qualifications of Sarah Palin,
one that many people don't know and those that do probably
haven't thought about it.

Before you dismiss the fact that Sarah Palin is Commander of the
Alaska National Guard consider this:

Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor
defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska
National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from
ballistic missile attacks. It's on permanent active duty, unlike
other Guard units.
As governor of Alaska , Palin is briefed on highly classified
military issues, homeland security, and counter terrorism. Her
exposure to classified material may rival even Biden's and certainly
by far exceeds Obama's.
She's also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force
(ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland
Security's counter terrorism plans.
Palin is privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to
the entire country's defense. Given Alaska 's proximity to Russia ,
she may have security clearances we don't even know about.
According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in
February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping
secrets.
She can be entrusted with our national security, because she already is."

Called the Iraq war a "task from God".

No, she didn't.

It's not honest to present a claimed 'decoding' as what the person actually said.

'Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending (troops) out on a task that is from God.'

Thank you for your sharing! I like i very much!
