McCain did not contradict Kissinger. McCain said that Kissinger didn't say to meet face to face on a presidential level. You conveniently left out the part where Kissinger qualified his statement by saying negotiations should start initially on a Secretary of State level, which was actually right in between the two sound bites you showed.

Again...Kissinger never said that the two presidents should meet (perhaps, btw, because Kissinger--much like Obama--is smart enough to know that Ahmadinejad is limited by the Leader's office, the Iranian security council and the commanders of the IRGC).

Trying to spin this into a Kissinger "flip-flop" doesn't make any sense. What Kissinger is advocating--and what the Bush Admin is finally realizing--is still worlds away from where we were two years ago. The talk-don't talk debate is a canard; an election year talking point used by each side to slam the other.

The fact of the matter is that our two nations are communicating more now than we ever have. Since 2002, we have worked with high level Iranian operatives on the mapping of two invasions, and up until recently, we had been conducting low-level discussions on Iraqi security. And that's just the stuff they tell us about.

Who aghould talk, when, where, what color tie should they wear, etc...this is gotcha politics.
