George and Charlie
Posted by Ilan Goldenberg

Some people thought the debate last night was bad.  But I thought it was fascinating to watch two respected journalists essentially drag their professional reputations through the mud.

This video in George and Charlie's honor.

The problem I have with Charlie, George,Matthews, and Russert is that they have onbession with what exactlty is the true American man. According to them it has to be some redneck who owns guns and believes in the literal intrepretation of the bible. So they try to make the candidates conform to this perception of what it is to be an American. But it is ridiculous and stupid to a let a minority of Americans decide how to act like "American," and the press seems to have given the rednecks a great deal of political power. Another reason is why there is so much bullshit on the campaign trial is due to the rise of the relgious right who have put issue of personal moraity and faith on the frontburner of American politics. This has led to an escalation of bullshit issues such as the candidates personal life or how many times that they have gone to church. The irony is that the neo-conservative Leo Struss believed that the religion is needed in order for Americans believe in some sense of national indentity greater than themselves. But instead the growth of the religious right has actually fractured the nation and made politics about petty issuses while ignoring the bigger problems that this nation faces. Finally the comment that Hillary made in the debate that the United States would respond massively if Israel was attacked by Iran appears to be moronic. Israel has a much bigger nuclear arsenal than Iran and probably doesn't need our help if in the unlikely possibilty that it faced a nuclear attack by Iran. What exactly would the US national interest be in engaging in a regional nuclear war?
