In the days just after the invasion, I seem to recall that an effort was made to disarm the populace, but that it was quickly abandoned following massive protests. The preservation of the dignity of Iraqi manhood apparently required that said Iraqis keep their precious guns. The Bush team, ever sensitive to the plight of gun owners everywhere, agreed to let the occupied population remain armed against their occupiers.
