Huckabee and Pakistan
Posted by Ilan Goldenberg

This is also quite reasonable

Iraq may be the hot war, but Pakistan is where the cold, calculating planning is going on. If al Qaeda strikes us tomorrow, the attack will be postmarked "Pakistan."

Let's see, according to The Huckster the US should:

1. Nurture moderate forces in the world because The United States' biggest challenge in the Arab and Muslim worlds is the lack of a viable moderate alternative to radicalism. But don't take The Huckster at his word.

2. Encourage an oligarchy (headed by Chalabi?) in Iraq: "Such moderation may not look or function like our system – it may be a benevolent oligarchy or more tribal than individualistic – but both for us and for the peoples of those countries, it will be better than the dictatorships they have now or the theocracy they would have under radical Islamists"

3. Improve life in the whole Muslim world, 1.3 billion people: "The lack of basic sanitation, health care, education, jobs, a free press, fair courts – which all translates into a lack of opportunity and hope. The United States' strategic interests as the world's most powerful country coincide with its moral obligations as the richest. If we do not do the right thing to improve life in the Muslim world, the terrorists will step in and do the wrong thing." Let's see, the worst offenders are Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which the US has been "nurturing" with billions of dollars in aid and oil purchases which hasn't improved their citizens' lives one iota--should we attack them to improve their lives?

4. Improve US foreign policy to better explain Islamic jihadism because they will also be willing to kill our children for their misguided cause. Killing our children is "misguided" and needs to be explained better?

5. Go after the only stable part of Iraq, and the people the US is using against Iran--Kurdistan.

6. "Contain" Iran, which just signed a $2 billion oil deal with China, has a pending gas deal with India and is awaiting a shipment of nuclear fuel from Russia. Good luck on that.

5. Conduct military strikes against Pakistan, which is headed by President Musharraf, the US bought-and-paid-for most faithful ally in the region on the unproven premise that Bush's pal Osama bin Laden is ensconced somewhere in Pakistan's wild tribal areas.

This imperialist porridge, curiously, would supposedly be implementing the Huckabee Doctrine: Much like a top high school student, if it is modest about its abilities and achievements, if it is generous in helping others, it is loved. But if it attempts to dominate others, it is despised.

Looks "quite reasonable" to me. Not.
