"What planet are we on?"
Posted by Max Bergmann

Zakaria calls a crazy a crazy in today's Washington Post,

The American discussion about Iran has lost all connection to reality...

Here is the reality. Iran has an economy the size of Finland's and an annual defense budget of around $4.8 billion. It has not invaded a country since the late 18th century. The United States has a GDP that is 68 times larger and defense expenditures that are 110 times greater. Israel and every Arab country (except Syria and Iraq) are quietly or actively allied against Iran. And yet we are to believe that Tehran is about to overturn the international system and replace it with an Islamo-fascist order? What planet are we on?

I think it's Planet Cheney, final outpost of the vanishing Viagra League in the Podhoretz System. Their minds lost to paranoid psychosis from age and too much experimentation with the powerful hallucinogen Ledeenium, the Cheneyans now plan the final battle against the fictional movie serial character Ahmadinejad the Merciless from their base on the the moon Islamo-Phobos, timed to coincide with the return of the comet Lieberman-Kyl.

But it isn't just the crazies. The whole liberal-interventionist/neocon-lite/VSP wing of the commentariat has repeated described the two-bit countries that comprise the Axis of Evil as "threats." You've adopted the neocon language on this, and painted yourselves in a corner where you can't help but half-agree with the crazies. So what does that make you?

Unfortunately, to the war-flogging wingnuts that currently infest the decision-making apparatus of our government, analyses like Zakaria's can be turned both ways. Fareed notes, correctly, that Iran is far from the heinous dreadful powerhouse of EEEVILLL! the neocon nutbars like to paint it as. However, to the Cheneyites, that's probably just more reason to attack them: if they are so weak, then the chances of their mounting any serious retaliation just go down accordingly! A cakewalk! Win-Win!
