Fighting Terrorism is a Progressive Value
Posted by Moira Whelan

I’m a little worried about some of the initial response I’m seeing to Obama’s terrorism speech today. I have tremendous respect for the handful of bloggers I’m seeing respond negatively to this move on Obama’s part, so I wanted to just reassert something I thought we all already knew.

We cannot forget that most of us get on George Bush’s case because he’s taken the fight AWAY from terrorism.

It really should be the rule, not the exception, that candidates tell us how, rather than if, they’re going to do that. (Can someone respond to a point of inquiry here…have other Democratic candidates presented such a comprehensive view of how they’d do that? If so, please link. If not, why not?)

If you want to debate Obama’s approach on the merits, that’s a worthy enterprise, but wanting to finish the war that Bush abandoned for his reckless policies is responsible not "hawkish."

Personally, I think the speech is great. It’s refreshing to see a grasp of the various fronts we have to address rather than lumping everything into one giant scare tactic. Obama is assuming that the voters who are watching this want more than just lip service, and I think he deserves kudos for that.

The speech is comprehensive, going from core al Qaeda in Pakistan/Afghanistan to homeland security (tugs at my heart strings a little). I say this because make sure you read it and not simply the MSM highlights.

In this case, Obama tells us that with actionable intelligence and if Pakistan won't do it, he'll take action.

I like virtually everyone, am against the Iraq war, and find war to be something we should avoid at all costs. But lets face it...OBL attacked us, and this attack has gone unanswered by President Bush. In the meantime, bin Laden working to attack us again. Iraq/war fatigue is completely understandable and must be a factor in the political will of this country to fight, but not a deterrent to do what must be done.

mindless drivel..Failing to acknowledge that Al Qaeda is coalesced in Iraq makes one a moron. Our enemies say the front line is Iraq. I believe them....Obama is a fraud without a wit of substance. He is the most vacuous and empty suit imaginable.

His rhetoric on Pakistan is helpful in the macro perspective but this man hasn't a clue about much of anything , let alone matters of the military...He's going to talk away all our problems...

"mindless drivel"? Have you read the speech? If you think Obama doesn't have a clue, then you should probably be making speeches on foreign policy somewhere important. You don't need to agree with his policies, but you make yourself look like an idiot to call HIM "vacuous." You should read more and type less.

"In this case, Obama tells us that with actionable intelligence and if Pakistan won't do it, he'll take action. "

So it's responsible to suggest that if the (oh so credible) us intelligence services conjure some up 'actionable' intelligence then the US should launch a war (cos that's what it would be) against a nuclear armed state with a population of 170 million.

well that's not going to end in tears,is it.

Oh how great! Now Obama's threatening Pakistan! First it was "all options on the table" "nuke strike okay" against Iran, now he's pushing for unilateral action in Pakistan!?

A NUCLEAR armed sovereign state!

WTF!?

This guy is a megalomaniatic psychopath! I really thought the US couldn't get a more perverse weirdo in the WH than Bush, but I guess that I was wrong.

"Actionable intelligence" is the same phrase Bush used to sucker us into Iraq -- screw that! I'm sick of politicians using their paranoia to drag the US down deeper and deeper into endless war and conflict.

Bunch of nut cases! Obama's a complete ass -- I'm more convinced about this today than I ever have been in the past.
