Peres: Israel has no Intention of Attacking Iran Posted by Shadi Hamid

Just found this press release from the Doha Debates in my inbox. According to Israeli Deputy PM Simon Peres, "Israel does not intend to use military action" against Iran. Is Peres saying that he personally doesn't think Israel will use military action, or his statement reflective of government policy? I'm not sure. But I suspect there will be a clarification of some sort soon. He also said, “we don’t have any problems with Iran. The problem is Ahmadinejad." Is this really the case? If the problem is Iran's nuclear capability, then that's supported not only by Ahmadinejad, but by most of Iran's ruling elite.

Speaking as a lawyer, the other question is whether he's deliberatly evading the central question with the word "intend." "I don't intend to do X" can mean "I won't do X," but it can also mean nothing more than "I currently have no firm plan to do X, but of course this might change in the future."

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert assured in a conference in Herzliya, near Tel Aviv, that Israel is prepared to use force to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Olmert said: "It is not the right of any country to retreat from their positions with regard to Iran's nuclear file."

Olmert explained that Israel had the right to work either in cooperation with America or unilaterally in order to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Israeli officials added that Israel is prepared to stage a preventive strike against Iranian nuclear installations by the end of this year.

Following the SOTU address, which apparently produced a much stronger wave of sudden domestic anxiety about an impending US attack on Iran than the Bush administration anticipated, the White House also began to issue these semantically careful denials about "intentions" and "plans". I think Peres is just on message.
