Mr. Murtha: Blogs One, Right-wing Goons Zero Posted by Lorelei Kelly

If the blogs have their way, the Right's political goonsquad will have to fight in the cyber-gutter before getting their screeds into the regular media. Last week, left leaning blogs were afire with the news that a seamy team of operatives was purchasing a domain name (murthalied.com) and getting ready to smear Congressman John Murtha-- using tactics similar to the Swift Boat Veterans for "Truth" (my quotes). Yes, those of the scornful purple band-aids at the GOP convention--mocking Senator Kerry's service (a display that so angered my veteran father that he swore off the GOP for life).  Here are some of the links that give background on this impending assault. Raw Story and the Agonist provide overview and context while Taylor Marsh ties it to Members of Congress and their staff. A Kos contributor rounds it off with some creepy tie-ins to international arms dealing.  And who is supposed to benefit from this electronic mud wrestle? The person running against Mr. Murtha in November.

Say you come across one of these goons and he or she starts talking smarmy about Mr. Murtha's service record. Here's what you say in response:

Are you calling the military incompetent, awarding ribbons to those who don't deserve them?

Do you realize that you are are tainting every servicemember's medals, by suggesting that their medals might be fraudulently awarded?

A few people have pointed out that a large part of the reason blogs caught on so quickly on the right is precisely because the 'gatekeepers' in the regular media were so sympathetic to the Democrats that it was very difficult to get the word out.

Insofar as an informed electorate is a good thing, gatekeepers suppressing information is not a good thing.

As far a 'murthalied.com' is concerned- the details of who registered it and who's hosting it are concealed behind Network Solution's privacy addresses, the only definitive contact I've been able to track down is the Pair technical contact. So how do you know who registered it, and why?

I think honest analysis of the media's perspective--given that Keith Olbermann alone gets so much press just because he's willing to speak up against Bush--would show that it is right-balanced, not left. The "liberal media" is a deliberate lie.

Our Best & Finest are out there doing their Very Best, and they and their families deserve the Very Best that a grateful nation can bestow.

When even one of us is maligned, all of us are maligned.

It is particularly repugnant to me when the "men" of my generation who are doing the maligning (or who are hiding in the shadows behind the maligners) have not they themselves served our nation in uniform...or somehow managed to avoid service in Vietnam.

Another thing that disgusts me is how some politicians rant and rave on the floor of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate about getting the bad guys...but when you take a close look at their biographies, you find out that they had educational deferments during the particularly "hot" years of our involvement in Southeast Asia, i.e., the 1960's and 1970's.

I had a graduate school professor of mine "confess" to me in 2002 that he was in an Army Reserve unit during the Vietnam War for the specific purpose of avoiding active military service in Southeast Asia. He also mentioned that there were professional ball players in the same unit.

I guess that those who thought at the time that their lives and health were more valuable than the lives and health of those of us who were over there doing the nation's work for Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, the Congress...and the American People.

How arrogant and cowardly that line of thinking was, is and always will be.

What distinguishes this as unique is that though newspapers certainly update stories all the time, but when doing so, they are required by standard journalism practice to make clear it’s a revision, stating prominently at the top this story is a revision and updating the date of the article to the date of the revision. They have done neither.

Any impression created by this posting that this indicates that the Sun-Sentinel is covering up what started all the uproar of this week over something that “never happened” is not my intent here. (legal disclaimers have become necessary)

Apparently Mr. Bill Pascoe puts more faith in continuing his slander strategy than makes sense.

Ms Rosenhause has her own special part in this. The Sun-Sentinel has removed their retraction ... the correction that rewrote the "the shot heard around the world" first paragraph. The Sun-Sentinel has suddenly placed it in their paid archives, removing it from public domain. The only way you will find the unethical rewrite (still in public domain) is through google cache. You may wish to contact her as well.

I can't say enough good things about what Brooks Jackson did with my original TRUTH FROM AN HONEST MAN pamphlet I loaned him.

My great, great, grandfather, who I am named in honor of, made the supreme sacrifice for our country in Lincoln's Union Army serving Stonewall Jackson his only defeat in the Civil War.

In conclusion, it warrants mentioning how this "Moonie" Lincoln quote came into common use, without any questions to its authenticity.

Use Google to do a search for this quote. Go back 10-15 pages and you'll find the older dates of its use. You'll discover it was the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth who brought this fiction to life within weeks of Dr. Waller's article.

You will find Larry Bailey of bootmurtha.com has dusted off this Moonie quote and is using it for his "Revival Tent Pass the Collection Plate" scheme, all over the net, including this gem written the chairman of Bailey's PAC, in which it is used twice, for emphasis:

It's no accident that Diana Irey was boons-waggled into using it.

Pascoe is the gent who hung tough with Jack Ryan, even after Dennis Hastert rightfully withdrew all GOP support for him in 2004, when Ryan was exposed for insisting his wife go to sex clubs with him and have sex in public.

"Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth" ignored a couple issues CRITICAL to our troops at war during the run-up to the 2004 election.

First, they sat silent knowing full well that Bush NEVER USED the number of troops he incessantly claims his generals asked for. Turkey would not allow the 40,000 troops of the 4th to pass through and participate in Bush's invasion of Iraq.

Bush waged war KNOWING our troops were 40,000 short.

Second, these same Lookatme! Showboaters sat silent when this very same troop shortage resulted in America's greatest tragedy of the war in Iraq.

EVERYONE who's ever gone through basic training knows that when you find your enemies weapons, you keep them secure.

Hundreds of tons of high explosives that our troops had captured at Al Qaqaa were abandoned specifically due to troops shortages, CREATED by Bush's incompetence in war.

These explosive stolen from Al Qaqaa are the weapons that have been used to blow our troops into too many parts to count each and every day of this war.

When some wimp, like Larry Bailey of bootmurtha.com, decides to pass his "gimme' some money" collection plate to support his concept of patriotism for a circus tent performance at The Cambria County War Memorial on October 1st of this year ...

Some would say there's nothing more patriotic than putting a moron who's never given a hoot about our troops at war (or he would have spoke up about those 40k troops left behind and Al Qaqaa IN 2004) in his proper place ...he's a coward.

To make matters even MORE entertaining, Larry Bailey actually thinks having John O'Neill, the original Lookatme! Show Boater, as his surprise guest speaker is a feather in his cap.

You may not like the stand John Murtha has been making, but for anyone who supports our troops at war, there's no way to respond to these idiot Swiftboaters' Reunion in Murtha's home town of Johnstown, Pa, than a chorus of Bronx raspberries.
