Recognizing a lost veteran, Sergeant Dan Clay of California.  This is all important and good. 

Says our offensive vs. terror offers more than military action - need to offer a hopeful alternative of political freedom and democratic reform.  Agree.

Elections are vital but are only the beginning.  Again, I agree and hope team Bush is really beginning to understand this.

Urges Mubarak toward more political openness.  Agree.

Says Hamas leaders must disarm, recognize Israel and work for lasting peace.  Agree.

Says Saudi is taking steps to reform.  Baby steps.

Democracies in the Middle East will not look like our own but "liberty is the right and hope of all humanity."  Agree

Iran:  "a nation held hostage by a small clerical elite that is holding country hostage and supporting Palestinian terrorists . . . Nations of the world must not permit Iranians to get nukes."

This is all right - problem is that everything lies in the implementation and the actions, not the words.  This Administration's methods have persistently undermined these goals.

Again back to isolationism.  This is clearly a label they want to tag on their opponents. 

"For people everywhere the US is a partner for a better life."  That should be true.  That has been true.  That's still true in some places.  But fewer since Bush took over.

It's 9.30 PM and not a word on domestic policy . . .  were they sandbagging?

Here's a word about Dan Clay. Whatever you think about the war in Iraq or US policy - get down on your knees tonight and thank your creator for people like Dan Clay. I knew the man. I loved the man. I am a former Captain in Dan's Marine Corps and I will tell you that Staff Sergeant Daniel J. Clay was one of the best that ever wore the uniform. He was nothing about politics or foreign policy. He was a Marine's Marine. If that is a problem for anyone, let me know where you are located. Because, it will take me about 10 minutes to raise a Brigade of Marines that will show up at your front door and explain this in person.

Here's where I have a problem. Our Marines are valuable. When it comes to the crunch they go out and kills the nation's enemies. Dan Clay wasn't about politics. But his death was about politics. He got sent a place where he was ineffective at killing the nation's enemies, and was wasted. That was wrong.

ABush would have been right to honor him. But Bush used him to get political support. He used Clay's death as a sort of necromancy, he tried to take the honor that should go to Clay and to the Marine Corps and drape it on himself.

It was right for Clay to be nonpolitical. It's fine for you to be nonpolitical. But that means you need somebody to guard your backs against evil or incompetent leaders. And the US civilians failed you. I'm sorry. I thought I was doing the best I knew how, but looking back I could have done more.
