European Disunion
Posted by Suzanne Nossel

Laura Rozen prints a few letters from European commentators talking about why the new EU constitution may be on the verge of being voted down in the Netherlands and France.  At some level its hard not to think it may do some good for the Europeans to be reminded how local politics, economic interests and popular fears can interfere with even the noblest geopolitical intentions.

One wonders what the effects of Schroeder's impending leftward shift -- and likely defeat at the hands of the CDU -- will be on Europe, especially if the Constitution fails in France.

Is it too late for the British, "EU-lite" vision to prevail? Much of the "United States of Europe" sounds okay over beer, but doesn't even look good on paper, much less in practice.

Maybe later, if Europeans decides to give up their national languages and identities to succumb to McCulture, but why now?

As for speaking louder with a collective voice, EU members currently have 2 permanent seats on the UN Security Council, numerous votes in NATO, and a collective economy nearly the size of the US.

What does more Brussels eurocracy add? Is it possible that a British "Third Way" would be more in order?

...even the noblest geopolitical intentions.

....

I thought we were discussing the proposed EU Constitution?

Jeff, the appeal of the EU to the people running things is that it would give them a way to harness all that collective (whatever) and point it all in one direction. As-is, each national government has it's own set of interests, which they actively work to advance, despite the competing interests of the other EU members.

As nice as the idea of a 'European' foreign policy might be, what seems to be taking place is a competition to see what national foreign policies will dominate.... and that gives the national governments on the losing end a very good reason not to go along with it.

As Suzanne mentioned earlier, local politics is important.
