Sarah Palin, while making an excuse for having just gotten a passport and for having never traveled abroad, basically just said that people who travel abroad are elitists and don't have to work for a living. Are you kidding me?

I have been seething over the ludicrous statements made by Palin during that interview. And, I am finally calm enough to make a comment about her remarks regarding people who travel abroad. She claims that the reason she didn't get a passport before last year is that she is not "of the culture" of people whose parents gave them a passport and a backpack and said "go travel the world" after college. "Noooooo," she said patronizingly. She worked two jobs most of her life until she had kids.

Let me say a few things as an educated, successful working mother of three-year-old twins:

First, I too, have worked two jobs most of my life. In fact, I have continued working two jobs AFTER I had kids. I teach, run a consulting business, clean the house, AND care for my two wonderful children.

My parents have given me plenty of things in life, including love, emotional support, friendship, the list goes on. However, they have NEVER given me a backpack and a passport and the implied stack of cash to just go hang out anywhere in the world I wanted.

In fact, I paid my way through college working THREE jobs. AND I graduated with honors. More than I can say for our friend Sarah Palin who attended four schools (one of them twice) in six years before finally graduating. But, I digress…

My husband and I have worked our butts off to make the first down payment on a home. We have worked our butts off to stay out of debt and maintain a savings. WeI have worked our butts off to make sure we have a nice, comfortable life. And I learned that from my parents who taught me the value of hard work and who did the same.

I did all this, AND managed to get a passport by the age of 25 and visit Europe for a month-long trip with my husband by the age of 27 that we worked our butts off to save the money for.

So, let me say one more thing: Sarah Palin is an asshole. In her effort to "speak directly to the American people" with her folksy bullshit and her "I can relate to the common man and woman because I have been there" attitude, she has completely alienated a large number of women who have worked, and worked, and worked to get to where we are AND we have managed to stay engaged in the world as well.

I am not saying everyone needs to or can travel abroad. But, good God, this woman we are considering for the VICE PRESIDENCY has the nerve to make offensive excuses for her complete disengagement from the world around her.

If anyone wants to leave this country, it does not require large sums of money. I have never made more 30k a year, yet I've managed to have traveled to Israel, Spain, The Netherlands, Cuba and the Bahamas. The Bahamas was the easiest trip, being that I'm from Florida.

But for someone to live adjacent to Canada, how on earth did she not manage to even drive to Vancouver? I would imagine it would be the same as me driving to Atlanta or Nashville (except a little colder).

For her to have less experience abroad than me and most people I know is simply absurd. To me it more reflects an opinion of "America is the best country on Earth and there is nothing to learn from leaving it." How can someone become the so-called "leader of the free world" without even knowing how the rest of the world thinks, acts, or works?
