Buried in today's NY Times piece on how Joe Lieberman, not Sarah Palin, was really John McCain's first choice for VP, is this nugget:

The selection was the culmination of a five-month process, described by Mr. McCain's inner circle and outside advisers in interviews this past weekend, and offers a glimpse into how Mr. McCain might make high-stakes decisions as president.

At the very least, the process reflects Mr. McCain's history of making fast, instinctive and sometimes risky decisions. "I make them as quickly as I can, quicker than the other fellow, if I can," Mr. McCain wrote, with his top adviser Mark Salter, in his 2002 book, "Worth the Fighting For." "Often my haste is a mistake, but I live with the consequences without complaint."

Ah, quick draw McCain. Nothing says putting country first and effective, experienced leadership than bragging about being brash, quick, first but wrong. Just what we need after 8 years of Bush, another leader who crows about being a good decider, regardless of the final outcome. To his credit, at least McCain admits he's usually wrong. And while he can live with the consequences, the American people, let alone the rest of the world, simply cannot.

This is important. John McCain, by selecting Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee has taken all of the focus off of his mean and empty campaign, his misrepresenting his and his opponents policy proposals, and lack of vision for the direction he would like to take the country.

Lucky for us all the latter is quite clear: "there will be more wars, more wars..." "just a little straight talk!"

John McCain is a hero...(pardon me if skip the details of a five and half year period in which Sen. McCain was subjected to enhanced interrogation techniques r otherwise unavailable). He nor his campaign has made it particularly clear how exactly this experience translates to the specifics of the presidency.

He has served in Congress for quite some time, yet the only legislation we here about is campaign reform (I admit I am at least as lazy as John McCain, so I am not going to look it up either), and one can bet there isn't much meat in that stew!

Hillary Clinton explained her time dodging bullets in Bosnia, bringing peace to Ireland, and telling China to stop abusing its citizens (she was quite firm).

What qualifies John McCain to be president?

He often has expressed his belief that the War on Terror and 'Radical, Extremist Islam' are the transcendental issues of our time. Yet, his approach is to continue an occupation of one nation (which arguably has few terrorists who may only be there because we are), and to follow Osama bin Laden to the 'Gates of Hell.' To date, both have proven to fail. But of course, 'he knows how to win wars,' and 'He will get Osama bin Laden, he will.'

Which leads one to say, "John, six years later man! Wrap this thing up and tell us where he is!"

John McCain's claims to and his fixation on a strategy employed five and half years, more than 4000 American lives, and trillions of dollars late, as the sole reason he should be the next president is laughable. His cronies can pen all the legislation they want to have Congress recognize the 'Success of the Surge," it doesn't change the magnitude of catastrophe the invasion and occupation have been or his full embrace of the leading actors. Adding insult to injury, he looks to boost his maverick credentials as if he were the first American to suggest more troops were needed for such ventures.

Over the course of the last year, the Bush administration has somewhat reluctantly adopted Barack Obama's foreign policy approach of holding Iraqis accountable for their own country, sending more troops to Afghanistan to fight the resurgent Taliban/Al Qaeda, authorizing unilateral military operations in and around war zones in order to act upon valuable intelligence, and engaging in talks with nations considered not so friendly to the United States (Senator: you talk to your enemies to decipher whether they can be swayed, or to get your point across effectively). John McCain has moved somewhat closer to Obama's approach though spitting venom with every step.

John McCain, looking to impress the electorate with his decisive leadership quickly condemned Russia's aggression towards its neighbor, and also made an appeal to the world for sympathies. The President of Georgia called him out on rhetoric and pleaded the world community to do more. More John McCain could do - sending senate allies and his little lady with little in hand to the region. The end result? Russia is still in Georgia today!

With two month before the elections, John McCain hasn't offered the American people a cogent description of what his foreign policy vision is (unless you count singing a ditty here or there, and scolding other nations who don't submit to his will). Kicking Russia out of the G-8, or G-7 (WTF?) doesn't really help America or the world even if it may settle a Cold War vendetta he may have.

John McCain turned 72 this week and is expected to die in 3 years and 362 days from today. It would be more than two months short of what would be the end of his first term.

Considering all of this (he probably didn't consider any of it) John McCain tapped Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee.

Neither one of them is taking this very seriously.

Since John McCain is the most proud of the time he spent in a prison cell, I think we should give him the opportunity to spend the rest of his life (which likely won't be long) in a prison cell or the Alzheimer's wing of the Phoenix VA hospital, which is really where he belongs.
