Last weekend I attended the International Women Leaders Global Security Summit in New York. Sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation, my organization was one of three partners on the project (The White House Project, the Council of Women World Leaders and the Women Leaders Intercultural Forum).  75 leaders from all corners of the globe gathered at Essex House right off Central Park for three days to discuss a new framework for global security--one that values both state and human security and views them as compliments, not as tradeoffs.  We used many participatory techniques learned from Americaspeaks --a top flight organization in the field of deliberative process. The four topics that launched the discussion were Responsibility to Protect, the Economics of Insecurity, Preventing Terrorism and Climate Change.  Check out our Call to Action and other details.  Perhaps this framework can help motivate some of the 20 million American women  who care about these issues but don't vote?

I just don't believe there's a responsibility to protect. Not with our volunteer military, anyway. One of the worst things that George HW Bush ever did was to send our troops into Somalia while he was a lame duck. Thank goodness that Bill Clinton had the guts to get the troops out. It's only too bad that Clinton didn't withdraw those troops immediately. Our soldiers had to be killed and their bodies paraded on live television first.

People say we had a responsibility to send troops into Rwanda. I can't imagine why we would have sent our volunteers into that Hell.

There was the mostly successful intervention in Eastern Europe. Except that we killed a lot of innocent Serbians in a quest for Milosevic.

What's next? Forcing people who signed up to defend America into risking their lives in Darfur?

A government's first responsibility is to its own people. Protecting civilian populations belongs way down on the list.

Thank you for participating in this Lorelei. This is an absolutely essential movement in the world today. Men have messed it up and women need to rescue it. The US in particular has a drug problem--too much testosterone--which needs to be countered.

The international flavor is great, and the former presidents and PMs featured are a stellar group. I was able to visit the hometown of Mary Robinson (Ballina, Ireland) last May and are they proud of her! As they should be.

I hope this movement can have an effect on the coming election. I would also hope that some progressive democrats would participate, and I that our friend Cynthia McKinney isn't forgotten either. You go.
