Word that the Bush administration is going to attempt to develop a Contra or Colombian style paramilitary counter-insurgent force in Pakistan should send a shiver down anyone's spine, as Ilan and Shawn have noted. But what this new effort also reflects is the total failure of the administration's approach the last six years.
The Bush administration has relied on Musharraf to use the Pakistani military to uproot Al Qaeda and the Taliban from the tribal regions and the results have been abysmal. Musharraf's peace deal with the tribal groups in the northwest regions all but threw in the towel. Newsweek even quoted a Taliban commander in Pakistan saying that “Until I return to fight (in Afghanistan), I'll feel safe and relaxed here.”
So since Pakistan, probably the most important U.S. ally in the 'war on terror', is unable to control a region that is host to Al Qaeda and the Taliban, which continues to wage war against us in Afghanistan, the Bush administration has gotten desperate. I guess, desperate is, as desperate does.
