Ok, it started when Michael Moore challenged Fred Thompson, perpetual fence-sitter and yet another boorish Republican in a field already full of them, to a debate. Moore's letter was presumably posted first on his site, and then - perhaps magically - found itself onto the Drudge Report, where non-stories become stories. The funny thing is that Thompson actually got goaded into responding - and by video no less, with something in his mouth resembling a, um, Cuban cigar.

It is the most cringe-inducing 40 seconds of Republican neo-macho posturing that I've seen in at least two weeks. "Mental Institution Michael, maybe something you oughtta think about?" That's a bit ad hominem, no? Oh, and the way Thompson says it, dripping with condescension. He must have practiced that line quite a bit this morning. It seems like there's a lot of reverse psychology going on here. The fact that Thompson's response made a nuance-loving, latte-sipping, occasional New Yorker-reading liberal like myself want to puke probably means that red-meat-eating, fire-breathing Conservatives are absolutely loving it, and thinking to themselves that a man who takes it to Michael Moore, can probably take it to the terrorists as well.

I do agree with Moore; that the embargo should be abolished. But his embellishing by saying Cuba has a better medical system than the United States is grossly inaccurate.

The fact is, what Moore says in Sicko is not the total truth. And his method of using documentaries to deliver a tainted message is embarrassing to any true filmmaker team.

I'm not clear on why anyone thinks Thompson's response was such a blow to Moore. First, he says, "I don't have time for you" -- well, apparently he has time to talk smack about a movie he hasn't seen and to make a video -- so what he really doesn't have time for is to address what Moore brought up, which is that if Thompson smokes Cuban cigars, he's a hypocrite and should be investigated by the feds to the same extent as Moore.

And his story about the Cuban documentary maker actually makes Moore's point. If a terrible regime like Cuba's can at least guarantee basic healthcare to all its citizens - and even if it's not as great as Moore might claim, there is a decent system by some measures -- why can't we do better, especially by people who are dying from working at the 9/11 site?

You right wingers are all the same. You are so busy sitting on your high horse that you ignore or miss or flatly refuse to acknowledge the point of the whole debate. While you think you are funny for ridiculing someone's viewpoint, you don't actually address anything. That is because the right relies on emotional attachment to their point of view without any intellectual foundation and the left, which is less sure of its viewpoint because one can never be intellectually sure of anything, actually tries to think about ways to improve the status quo. So even though you righties don't believe it, the left is actually working to benefit you too because they are just trying to work on problems continuously while the right is working on keeping everything the same. The only thing the right seems intent on improving is ways in which to horde as much money as possible, depriving as many people as possible from even the barest subsistent type of living. When is the right going to realize that when they take away the emotions from their staunch defense of "traditional family values", they will end up actually benefiting themselves by working together with the left to improve living conditions for everyone, thereby actually increasing the number of people who can become consumers of capitalism. Not that I'm really for adding to the already excessive consumption going on in the world today, but hey if feeding people and giving them healthcare so they can become good consumers is the only way republicans can be convinced to do it, then I guess that will have to do for now until these "christians" realize that stuffing their wallets with billions that they can never possibly even spend only deprives millions of people from actually life itself and that their lifestyle is so impossibly far from anything Christ espoused, they may have to reconsider a new paradigm. Like, can you come up with a new argument other than one that begins with..."our founding fathers..." or "the constitution says...". Um, that was 200 years ago. They didn't even have toilets then and they had witch hunts. Are we going to rely on the dozen or so guys who wrote that document forever. Can't we build on it, come up with something new. Geez!

By the way, to the person who referred to Thompson making the comment about a mental hospital to Michael Moore, you missed the point on that one too. Thompson was not telling Moore that he should think about the fact that Castro sent another filmmaker to a mental institution as a reason he shouldn't admire Castro. Thompson was being a smartass, suggesting that Michael Moore ought to consider checking into a mental institution because Thompson thinks he's crazy. It's the kind of cheap response we get from all you smug republicans including George Bush, who when faced with a question they can't actually answer intellectually, make fun of the person asking the question. Really bright, schoolyard debate skills. As in, "you're smarter than me, so F___ you!"
